NEW BRITAIN - Quest Diagnostics has acquired the outreach laboratory services of Hospital of Central Connecticut and William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, part of the Hartford HealthCare network.
Hartford HealthCare Communications Director Shawn Mawhiney told the Hartford Business Journal that 14 of the 200 total lab employees at the hospitals have lost their jobs. The others have been hired by Quest, Backus or HCC.
“We are confident our physicians and patients will be in very good hands,” said Bimal Patel,resident of Backus Hospital, and Lucille Janatka,president of The Hospital of Central Connecticut.
Last year, Quest acquired the outreach lab service business Clinical Laboratory Partners, a subsidiary of Hartford HealthCare.
That acquisition will enable physicians and patients in Connecticut to directly access Quest’s range of testing services, including several proprietary advanced diagnostic services, as well as an expanded network of patient service centers.
Dr. Harry Sanchez, vice chief of pathology at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, and a few of his colleagues were against the transfer of services. He and his team spoke against the move at the public hearing at the Department of Public Health in August.
Sanchez believed that although the acquisition would be profitable in the short term, he did not think it would be in the “best interest of the quality of care we provide, the breadth of choice we can off, or the long term health of the hospital.”
He said he is disappointed with the results.
Testing performed by the two hospitals will transition to Quest’s full-service clinical laboratory in Marlborough, Mass., as well as rapid response labs in Wallingford, Torrington, Stratford, Hartford and Norwich.
Additional terms were not disclosed.
The Hospital of Central Connecticut sites to be transferred to quest are: 100 Grant St., 61 Hart St. and 183 N. Mountain Road in New Britain; and 360-1 N. Main St. and 55 Meriden Ave. in Southington.
