NEW BRITAIN - The inauguration of Central Connecticut State University President Zulma Toro has been postponed until further notice so she can focus on family and friends affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

Toro flew to Miami last Friday to meet her mother, who had just arrived from Puerto Rico. The two have returned to Connecticut, but Toro continues to put her time and energy into relief efforts for family and friends still on the island.

“The president is very much focused on her family and friends in Puerto Rico,” said Janice Palmer, media relations officer for CCSU.

Friday’s inauguration and other events associated with Inauguration Week are now off. Palmer said rescheduling has not yet been discussed.

“The situation in Puerto Rico is so dire and the need for help - my help and the help of others - is so great that I cannot turn my back on my family and friends and others I may be able to help,” Toro said in a statement.
