NEW BRITAIN - Two New Britain High School students were recently honored by national organizations for their academic achievement.

Kiernan Foster was named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Program, which recognizes students who had one of the top 50,000 PSAT scores nationwide. Over 1.6 million students took the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October.

Gabriella Roy was named a National Hispanic Scholar by the National Hispanic Recognition Program. Roy received this honor after she scored in the top 2.5 percent among Hispanic and Latino PSAT/NMSQT test takers in the region.

Every year, the NHRP recognizes about 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the test.

“Kiernan is a bright young lady who has clearly demonstrated the ability to compete on a national level based on her academic prowess and her PSAT scores,” NBHS Principal Joseph Pinchera said of Foster. “Kiernan exudes passion, perseverance, and grit in everything she does.”

“Gabriella has been performing at a very high level academically for a long time,” Pinchera said of Roy. “Her classroom performance along with her ability to balance academics and play three varsity sports is impressive. There is no doubt in my mind that Gabriella will make an amazing nurse practitioner or physician assistant someday.”
