Candidate forum today

NEW BRITAIN - Mayoral and Board of Education candidates will vie for public support Thursday afternoon when they meet each other in a candidate forum at New Britain High School.

Hosted by the New Britain Federation of Teachers - in collaboration with the New Britain Federation of Paraprofessionals, OIC New Britain, the NAACP New Britain Branch, the NBHS School Governors Council and the YWCA - the forum will feature candidates asking questions about education in the city.

Democratic candidate for mayor Merrill Gay and incumbent Mayor Erin Stewart will be asked questions in a forum style from 4 p.m. to about 5 p.m. Al Mayo, who is running as an independent, was not reached out to for the forum.

For the Board of Education, incumbent Republican-endorsed Nick Mercier, incumbent Republican-endorsed Democrat Mallory Deprey and incumbent Democrat-endorsed Daisy Sanchez will join newcomers Nancy Rodriguez, endorsed by Republicans, and the Democrat-endorsed Violet Sims and Annie S. Parker. The forum for Board of Education candidates will be from about 5 p.m. to about 6 p.m.

The event is open to the public and free. The candidate forum will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Lecture Hall in NBHS, 110 Mill St.
