NEW BRITAIN - The city’s youth basketball program is set to make its return in just a few weeks and registrations are currently being accepted.
The program, for boys and girls, runs from November to March and is split into three divisions: third and fourth grade; fifth and sixth grade; and seventh and eighth grade. The fee for the fifth grade through eighth grade participants is $60 per resident or $100 per non-resident and $40 for each additional child. The fee for the third and fourth grade league is $50 per resident, but the other fees remain the same.
All returning fifth and sixth grade and seventh and eighth grade players will remain on the same team as last year. All newly registered players must attend team selection night at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 for third and fourth grade, Nov. 1 for fifth and sixth grade and Nov. 2 for seventh and eighth grade.
All team selection nights will be at Roosevelt School, 40 Goodwin Street. All new players must report to team selection nights or they will be randomly assigned to a team. All returning players in fifth through eighth grades will be notified about their team’s practice night by their coaches.
Games are held on Saturdays at New Britain High School and practices take place once a week. Practices begin the second week of November and conclude in March. Games start Saturday, Dec. 2, and run until March.
Coaches will hand out practice and game schedules. The youth basketball program is still looking for volunteer coaches and assistant coaches. Anyone interested in coaching this year should contact the league coordinator, Matt Scofield or Eric Dowling, at 860-826-3358 or 860-826-3364.
Registrations are accepted at team selection nights or in the Parks and Recreation Department office from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday in Room 302 of City Hall, 27 West Main Street. People can also register online at www.nbparknrec.org .
