NEW BRITAIN - The Common Council will discuss discounts on prescriptions for residents in its meeting tonight.

As a member of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, New Britain is eligible for the CCM Prescription Discount Card Program through health care company ProAct, Inc. Through the program, residents who have no health insurance - or don’t have prescriptions covered under their current plan - can receive a card that will give them discounts on all prescriptions.

The card offers the following features and benefits:

n  Anyone can participate regardless of age or income.

n  All prescription medications are covered, including pet prescriptions that are human-based and can be filled at a pharmacy.

n  Cost savings are on brand name and generic medications, with generic prescriptions offering the highest savings.

n  Discounts are also offered on other medical services including vision, hearing and Lasik services.

More than 63,000 pharmacies participate in the program, including CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Stop & Shop, and Big Y. Many New Britain pharmacies also participate, including Arch Street Pharmacy, Access Care Pharmacy, New Britain Pharmacy, Beacon Prescriptions and Costco Pharmacy.

The CCM Prescription Discount Card Program costs nothing for municipalities or participating residents. ProAct negotiates discount rates directly with participating pharmacies that agree to accept reduced margins on discount card transactions for patients who have no prescription drug coverage.

The council will vote on authorizing the mayor to enter into a one-year contract with ProAct for the program in tonight’s meeting.

In other action tonight, the council is expected to discuss leasing a vacant commercial space to Bike New Britain, Inc. Bike New Britain has expressed interest in the space on the first floor of Szczesny Garage, at 39 Bank St. The proposed lease term, which will be discussed by the Committee on Planning, Zoning and Housing prior to the Common Council meeting, is for Dec. 1 2017 to Nov. 30 2018 at a rate of $200 per month.

The Common Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall.
