NEW BRITAIN – The area of Main Street located between Columbus Boulevard and East Main Street will be closed for two days next week for construction near the railway.
Complete road closure of Main Street at the railroad at-grade crossing between Columbus Boulevard and East Main Street will begin at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15 and is expected to remain closed until 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17.
While the road is expected to remain closed for a few days, pedestrian access to the area is expected to re-open at7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15.
The construction will upgrade the Main Street railroad at-grade crossing on the Pan-Am Railways. The upgrade includes replacement of the existing crossing surface and will be completed by Pan-Am Railways.
Earlier this week, Pan Am Railways paid the city $38,432.24 for damages related to a incident last December where a southbound train derailed on as it was rounding a curve in front of Columbus Plaza, leaving seven cars on their side with some debris falling into the road. Two tank cars came to a stop across Chestnut Street, immediately tying up traffic. The cleanup took three days.
The New Britain Police Department will have personnel on the scene throughout the duration of the construction. Anyone with questions regarding the construction should call the City of New Britain Public Works Department at 860-826-3350.
