PLYMOUTH - Divisi, an all-male a cappella singing group from Central Connecticut State University, will return to town for a concert on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m., in the auditorium at Terryville High School.
“They are coming back for the third year in a row and we are really excited and trying to get the word out to people in town,” said Julie Kozikowski, president of Friends of Music, the parent support group for the THS band and choir students.
“Their performance last spring was met with a standing ovation,” she said. “You won’t want to miss this return engagement.”
Tickets are $5 per person. Children under five are free. Tickets will be available at the door. Divisi will share the proceeds from the concert with the THS band and choir students for an upcoming trip to Washington, D.C.
Divisi is a contemporary a cappella group that describe themselves as “a pinch of rock, a dash of pop, a little bit of doo-wop, a teaspoon of R&B, a bit of jazz and mix it up.”
Their sound is like a full band but without the traditional instruments. Their voices are their instruments - mimicking the drums, brass and winds, along with the vocals. The music appeals to all ages, especially to fans of the 2012 movie “Pitch Perfect” and its two sequels.
Founded in October of 2005, the name of the group comes from the Italian word for “divided,” referring to a piece of music in which the voices split, which is called a “divisi.”
The members of Divisi pride themselves on their ability to sing a fun, entertaining and supremely musical repertoire. The most important part of their mission is that “our audiences leave feeling entertained and encouraged to spread our music to others.”
Divisi took second place in the 2013 “BOSSton Sings” competition and was featured on the “Best of Collegiate A Cappella 2016” compilation album and the “Voices Only” 2012 compilation album.
The group members are currently listed as: Ray Jackson, music director; Alex O’Neil, assistant director; Antonio La Rosa, president; Keanii Muñoz, vice president; Steven Servedio; Andrew Sayasith; Colby LaMarche; Mike Ruby; Ben Goodwin; Dijon Johnson; Gianmarco Venditti; Ben Kaminski; Angelo DeSalvio; and James Angelopoulos.
The members list their musical influences as Rockapella, Duwende, Firedrill!, Overboard, Sonos, Peter Hollens, The House Jacks, Mosaic, Edge Effect, Pentatonix, Ball In The House and The Exchange.
