NEW BRITAIN - At 12:04 a.m. on New Year’s Day, Amari Lee Rosado became the first baby born in New Britain in 2018.

The milestone delivery “was a total surprise,” her mother, Lahquitta Weaver, said while sitting in bed at the Hospital of Central Connecticut Monday afternoon. “I was in shock.”

Weaver, a city resident, was expecting to deliver on Jan. 23, but after her water broke at work over the weekend, she quickly realized things would be happening much sooner.

Amari has three siblings: Michael, 10, Maleiah, 8, and Sanai, 2.

“When I was told she could be the first baby of 2018, I was like, wow,” Weaver said.

“It was exciting,” she continued. “I wasn’t hoping she would be the first, but it was pretty cool, though. It was a blessing.”

Weaver said she was originally hoping for a little boy, but after giving birth to Amari, at 5 pounds, 4.8 ounces, she couldn’t help smiling broadly as she held her little girl.

“She’s here and she’s my little angel,” Weaver said.
