NEW BRITAIN – A city man jumped to his death on a Route 72 overpass late Tuesday after crashing into a guard rail, seriously injuring his passenger, state police said.

David Rodriguez, 55, of 290 Washington S., lost control of his Toyota Camry while driving on Route 72 near exit 7 at about 8:45 p.m., police said.

The car crashed into a metal guard rail injuring his passenger, Norma Vargas, 49, of the same address. Rodriguez, who was apparently not injured in the crash, got out of the vehicle and jumped from the overpass, state police said. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Vargas suffered life threatening injuries. Her condition is unknown, Trooper Kelly Grant said. Police have not determined why Rodriguez jumped from the overpass after the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Bernier at Troop H at 860-534-1000, ext. 6019.
