NEW BRITAIN -American chess grandmaster Aleksandr Lenderman will be at the Armenian Church of the Holy Ressurection Saturday for an event hosted by the New Britain Chess Club.
Lenderman will give a lecture of about an hour starting at 10:30 a.m. at the church, at 1910 Stanley St. Afterward, a simultaneous chess exhibition will be held.
For more than 10 years, Lenderman has been participating in tournaments as well as serving as a coach, instructor and mentor for students of all ages.
He is best known for winning titles in the 2005 World Youth Under-16 Chess Championship, 2015 World Open and the 2017 U.S. Open.
Lenderman, who earned the grandmaster rank in 2010, holds a mathematics degree from Brooklyn College in New York.
Founded in 1901, the New Britain Chess Club formed with 33 chess enthusiasts, led by John Kirkham, in a building in the downtown district.
Today, the New Britain Chess Club is the largest chess club in the state. The club meets every Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. for casual and tournament play.
