BRISTOL - A New Britain woman is facing charges after allegedly crashing a vehicle into a wooded area off of Jacobs Street and leaving the scene without reporting the wreck.

Keneisha Griner, 40, has been charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility and restricted turns.

According to the arrest warrant, police received an anonymous complaint on Dec. 7, at about 4:40 a.m., from someone who said it appeared as though a vehicle had struck a guardrail and drove into the woods off of Jacobs Street, near Rockwell Park. Investigators located the vehicle off the north side of the road. The doors were locked and multiple airbags had been deployed.

Police said there were skid marks about 80 feet long, leading to the Honda Civic. The engine was still warm, leading officers to believe the accident had recently occurred.

Police attempted to find the driver using a K9, but no one could be located. Officers found that the vehicle was registered to a New Britain woman, who told police days later that she had not been in Connecticut for the past few months. She also said her daughter, Griner, had been allowed to use the vehicle.

When police spoke to Griner, she said she was driving to her son’s house around 4 a.m., when the steering wheel locked up on the Civic, causing her to lose control and drive into the woods, the warrant said. She told officers she was not injured in the wreck and that didn’t know she was supposed to report it to police, according to the document.

Police were later granted a warrant for Griner’s arrest, and she was charged earlier this month. She is free on a $500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Bristol Superior Court on Tuesday.
