NEW BRITAIN - Three New Britain residents were arrested Friday after allegedly firing paintballs from a car at a man mowing his lawn in the Smalley Street area.

Keith Thomas, 21, Brandon Crockett, 23, and Hasan Harris, 24, were charged with breach of peace, third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance.

At 2:45 p.m., the man told police, a dark vehicle slowed down and a male passenger fired several blue paintballs at him, striking him in the head, said police Lt. Jeanette Portalatin. The victim got the license plate number and immediately contacted police.

Shortly afterward, dispatch received an anonymous complaint of a dark vehicle firing blue paintballs in the area of Bay Avenue, Portalatin said.

An officer traveling on Corbin Avenue spotted a black Chevrolet Cruze bearing the plate number given by the victim and pulled it over, Portalatin said. The officer noticed that the car had blue paint on its hood and front windshield, she added.

The three men in the car were detained while the vehicle was searched, Portalatin said. Officers found a small amount of marijuana in the car, along with a paintball gun loaded with blue paintballs, she added.

The man who had been shot in the head identified one of the occupants of the vehicle as the person who had shot at him.

Thomas, Crockett and Harris are due in court for arraignment on May 17. They were released from custody on $100,000 bond.
