BERLIN – Police and firefighters spent more than an hour checking the ponds on Route 9 northbound for a potential missing person this morning after someone reported seeing an empty canoe, officials said.

Traffic was moving slowly through the area just after the Christian Lane northbound on-ramp as firefighters and police searched. Dispatchers said someone reported seeing an empty canoe which appeared to be taking on water on the ponds which abut Route 9 northbound at about 7:30 a.m.

“We checked all the ponds and searched the area but there were no signs of anyone being in the water,” said East Berlin Fire Chief Thomas Farr.

The search was called off after 9 a.m. after firefighters had walked around each of the ponds just off Route 9, Farr said.
