NEW BRITAIN - A city man allegedly shot another man Friday evening on Lawlor Street, police said.

Jose Rodriguez, 31, of 286 Glen St., was at 286 Lawlor St. at about 8 p.m. Friday to drop off a wedding invitation when he and a man who lives there got into an argument, Police Capt. Jeanette Portalatin said.

Several witnesses, including the victim’s family, said Rodriguez, who has a conviction barring him from having a gun, shot the other man in the leg, according to a warrant for his arrest.

The family members knew Rodriguez by the name “Cheo” and knew the name of his girlfriend, but didn’t know his real first name, police said.

The victim was found bleeding and unconscious on the steps of the Lawlor Street house. A family member was holding a cloth to the wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding, officers said.

Police were not able to interview the man later because he was heavily sedated after being treated. He was reported in stable condition on Monday.

Police said the suspected shooter had fled before they arrived.

He turned himself in early Monday morning to face an arrest warrant charging him with criminal possession of a pistol and first-degree assault.

He was held on $500,000 bond following his arraignment in New Britain Superior Court Monday.
