NEW BRITAIN - The owner of Cowork New Britain is completing the rehabilitation of its home, with the grand opening is only a week away.
Jonathan Johnson, who has been living in New Britain for the past 10 years, saw a need for a work space in the city, which he wants to fill. Cowork New Britain will be a shared work space for individuals and small businesses.
“There’s probably a bunch of people who would benefit from having an office where they can come, run their business, have client meetings, rent a conference room, get their mail here, have a receptionist here, and kind of start their businesses here, or grow their businesses here, have the facilities to be able to do that,” Johnson said.
Cowork is at 117 W. Main St, in the same building as Connecticut Furs.
The grand opening and ribbon cutting is Wednesday, June 20, at 2 p.m. However, it will not officially open until July 1.
The grand opening will feature refreshments and will be an opportunity to network with city officials and other attendees.
“Even the small businesses that are interested in working down here can start doing some networking with each other, with some officials from the city, starting on that day,” Johnson said.
Johnson said he will hire two people: a front desk receptionist and a manager.
Cowork clients will have full- or part-time memberships, depending on the needs of each business or individual. Members will have access to the office space 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Johnson is still doing renovations to the space to have it up to date. He still has to do some painting, put up signs and posters. He has already put in new carpet tiles, and furniture. The total cost of the renovations and getting the space ready was $15,000.
Johnson said one of the biggest challenges he has faced in this process was deciding not to take out a loan.
“Just managing the money very tightly, making sure I was using the money in the right kinds of expenses, and also just managing life,” Johnson said.
Johnson said he signed the lease last Dec. 1, and added that getting the business ready has taken longer than he expected.
But Johnson said he knows that regardless of how much time it takes, he will accomplish his mission.
“The mission of Cowork New Britain is to help small businesses start and succeed in New Britain,” Johnson said. “I’m committed to the revitalization of New Britain and what I can do to do that is to start this co working space. And I believe that we can create more opportunities for small businesses to start in New Britain and grow, and I want Cowork New Britain to be part of it.”
The main hours of operation will be Monday to Friday from 9: a.m. to 5 p.m. Cowork can be contacted at email@example.com.
