NEW BRITAIN- The Board of Police Commission unanimously approved the promotion of Lt. Benjamin Murphy to the position of captain during a special meeting Wednesday.
As a captain, Murphy will command the entire Patrol Division, Chief James Wardwell said. A 16-year veteran of the police department, Murphy is now first-shift commander.
Murphy recently produced a recruitment video for social media and is active in recruitment activities, Wardwell said. Murphy is also spearheading a flag football fundraiser Aug. 25 for Lt. Julia Gallup, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
Murphy has been working with city schools on addressing safety concerns and is involved in community activities including recruitment with the NAACP, the chief said. Murphy also started a Criminal Justice Club at New Britain High School, the Chief said.
Also promoted during the meeting were Sgt. Matthew Marino to the rank of lieutenant and Officer Michael Beebe to the rank of sergeant. The board interviewed more than a dozen candidates for the positions during the special meeting Wednesday and then voted unanimously to promote Murphy, Marino and Beebe.
“I’m extremely proud of all the officers who put in for these positions,” Wardwell said. “Having so many good people makes these important selections so much more difficult. We are blessed to have so much talent.”
Mayor Erin Stewart signed off Thursday on the promotions, which will take effect on Sept. 2.
