Fire damages building in New Britain plaza

NEW BRITAIN -Firefighters on their way to a fundraiser Sunday morning saw and responded to a building fire on Horse Plain Road.

Fire Chief Raul Ortiz said firefighters on Engine 8 were on their way to collect money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association around 9:30 a.m. when they noticed light smoke coming from the eaves of a building at 16-22 Horse Plain Road.

Investigating, they discovered flames coming from an air conditioner at the rear of Fade Masters Barber Shop, one of several businesses in the plaza.

Engine 8’s company officer notified dispatch, which sent additional companies.

Royal Pizza, a church and the barbershop lease space from building owner Satnam LLC. All will remain closed until repairs are made to the structure, which sustained fire, heat and smoke damage.

No injuries were reported, and the city’s fire marshal is investigating.
