NEW BRITAIN - Police are looking for information on a melee that included gunfire on Tremont Street Thursday night.
Bystanders saw a male being attacked by three men near the corner of East Lawlor and Tremont streets at 10:17 p.m. The target of the assault ran up East Lawlor Street with his attackers following, witnesses said. Other men who appeared to be with the man who was targeted showed up and a fight broke out on Tremont Street as the participants ran from East Lawlor Street back to Tremont, the bystanders said.
A man then showed up in a car, got out, walking toward the fight, and pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, bystanders said. Area residents heard at least three gunshots. The people fighting in the street scattered and the man in the car took off after them. Police received reports of a large fight and gunfire happening on the street, Lt. Adam Rembisz said. Officers arrived and found Evans Morales, 33, of 2055 Citrus Falls Circle, Tampa Bay, Florida, walking in the area, Rembisz said. He had obvious facial injuries, but he refused to tell investigators what happened, Rembisz said.
Officers found bullet casings in the street, Rembisz said.
Morales was charged with second-degree breach of peace and possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana. He was released on a promise to appear after his arraignment in New Britain Superior Court Friday morning.
Anyone who may have information on the incident is asked to call 860-826-3132.
