NEW BRITAIN – Police are investigating the cause of a motorcycle verses car accident that seriously injured a man on West Main Street Wednesday afternoon.

The male motorcyclist was seriously injured in the crash and is being treated at an area trauma center, Police Chief James Wardwell said.

The driver of the car is cooperating with the investigation, Wardwell said.

The crash occurred at about 4 p.m. on West Main St. near Slater Road as traffic was building for the drive home. West Main Street was closed in the area of Wooster Street and Norton Street so police could deal with the crash and so the New Britain Police Traffic Unit could investigate.

Traffic in the area was moving slowly with cars rerouted up side streets off of West Main Street and police cruisers blocking access from other streets to the scene of the crash. As of 5:30 p.m. the road was still closed, said Wardwell who had no estimate on when the road would be reopened.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have information to call Sgt. Steven King at 860-826-3071.
