NEW BRITAIN - The last time the city participated in Wreaths Across America Day was in 2014, but this year, the Disabled American Veterans Hardware City wants to make sure that every fallen soldier’s gravesite at Fairview Cemetery is honored with a wreath in December.

A series of fundraisers are scheduled to raise money for the 1,400 wreaths, the first being a pasta dinner.

“This is our first big fundraiser for our project this year and we are hoping for 300 or more people,” said Dennis Taricani, commander of the DAV Hardware City Chapter 8. “We encourage the entire New Britain community to come out and support this terrific project honoring those who served.”

The dinner will be held on Wednesday, May 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at VFW Post 511, 41 Veterans Drive.

Guests will sit down to a dinner of pasta with homemade sauce, meatballs, salad and garlic bread. Cocktails are not included; however guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine. Music, entertainment, and raffle prizes will also be provided.

Tickets are $15 for adults or $100 for a table of eight. Children 12 and under are admitted for free with an adult admission. Each admission paid equals the cost of one wreath.

Wreaths Across America Day is observed nationally on a Saturday in December designated by the U.S. Congress. Its purpose is to remember fallen soldiers, honor those who served and teach children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.

New Britain will hold its ceremony at noon on Dec. 14, at Fairview Cemetery located at 120 Smalley St.

“Our fundraising goal this year is $25,000, which will not only ensure placement of wreaths at Fairview this year, but that we have a strong financial foundation for future years,” said Taricani. “We want to make Wreaths Across America an annual tradition in New Britain.”

Sponsors and supporters of the event include DAV Hardware City Chapter 8, Northwestern Veterans TGM Memorial Post, City of New Britain, Community Foundation of Greater New Britain, Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin, the Tomasso Group, the Hospital of Central Connecticut, Whitson’s School Nutrition and Sir Speedy Printing and Marketing Services.
