NEW BRITAIN - The city is offering financial assistance to property owners seeking to make improvements to their sidewalks through the Cost-Sharing Sidewalk Repair Program.
“We recognize that repairing a sidewalk can be costly and in some cases simply unfeasible to budget for,” said Mayor Erin Stewart. “We hope that this program will be beneficial to property owners; these improvements will make for a safe, better connected community.”
According to City Ordinance section 21-70, property owners are required to keep sidewalks bordering their properties safe and convenient for public use by repairing all defects which may endanger public traffic.
The Cost-Sharing Sidewalk Repair program will reimburse property owners for up to 50% of the costs of sidewalk replacement for single family residential properties, 40% for two family properties, and 33% for three to six family properties.
The program will be offered until the funds run out. The city has allocated $50,000 for the program.
Property owners interested in applying for the program may contact New Britain City Surveyor, Mike Caruso at 860-826-3376 or by email at Mike.Caruso@newbritainct.gov.
The program’s limitations and requirements are:
o Property owners must enter an agreement with the City to be eligible for this program and sidewalk repair reimbursement funds.
o This program is limited to New Britain residents, and owner occupied rental properties.
o $6,000 is the maximum value the City will reimburse a property owner.
o The maximum construction cost the City will reimburse a property owner is based on the pricing of the City’s sidewalk contractor, which was selected under a public bid process.
o New Construction is exempt from this program.
o The program is limited to sidewalk repairs on existing properties.
o Sidewalk work must be performed by a qualified contractor licensed to do sidewalk construction with the City.
o Work must be completed in conformance with the City’s engineering standards.
o All applicable state and local permits must be obtained when doing the sidewalk repair work.
