NEW BRITAIN - New Britain VFW Post 511 has announced two area high school seniors as its 2019 scholarship recipients.
“It’s an honor and I’m really proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish thus far,” said Logan Prentiss, 17. “It’s really nice to get some help,” he added.
Prentiss is a senior at Rocky Hill High School and was chosen because of his academic successes while competing at the state level with the swim team and participating is several extracurricular activities.
Prentiss has been accepted into the University of Connecticut, where he will major in environmental engineering this fall.
Prentiss said he chose his major because he has always cared about the environment. “It just clicks for me,” he said.
John Kurnik, 18, from St. Paul Catholic High School in Bristol, was selected for excelling in academics, school government and sports including varsity football and track.
Kurnik, who has been accepted by several universities, recently decided to attend Sacred Heart University, where he plans to major in political science and law.
Scholarship applicants must be a child or grandchild of a post member, a high school graduating senior continuing his or her education. The applicants must show academic success, good citizenship through community service, involvement in extra-curricular activities and financial need.
Each scholarship is worth $750.
