NEW BRITAIN – Vibe Athletics’ 23rd annual basketball league will start on Saturday July 13 with registration at Klingberg Center’s gym at 370 Linwood St.

Kindergarteners through fifth graders may register at 1:30 p.m. Registration for children in middle school starts at 2:30 p.m.

Early registration will be available on Thursday July 11 at Klingberg Center’s gym from 7 to 8 p.m.

Saturday will also include drills and team selection. The league is looking to make from four to eight teams on each division.

Registration costs $60 per player for the eight-week season with the uniforms included.

“We are doing NBA Uniforms,” Jerry Carter, president of Vibe Athletics, said. “It’s going to really look nice.”

The league will meet every Saturday starting on July 13th and ending on August 31st.

For Carter, 23 years of coaching children means a lot more than a basketball game.

“It just feels like you are long standing in the community like Vibe Athletics is a brand in the city,” Carter said. “The funny part is I have fathers who are coaching their sons in my league and used to be players in my program in 1996, 1997, when I first started.”

In addition, children who have gone through Vibe Athletics’ programs have made it far, Carter said.

“I have kids that played in my program in the NFL,” Carter said.

Former players of Vibe Athletics made it into the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, he added.

According to Carter, children in the league learn more than just a game. Skills such as team building, basketball etiquette and taking directions from a coach will also be taught.

“My league is a development league. That’s why I start them at kindergarten,” Carter said.

Teams will built based on each child’s age and knowledge of the game.

Volunteer coaches are welcome to join Vibe Athletics’ team, but they have to go through a background check.
