NEW BRITAN - A Hartford woman was arrested for attempting to steal a rental car last year.

Nineka Tummings, 39, is charged with second-degree larceny in the incident.

According to the warrant for her arrest, an employee from Elite Auto Rental LLC, also known as Ace Rent-A-Car, told police in August Tummings rented a red 2013 Dodge Durango on Feb. 28, 2018 and failed to return it by the due back date of May 14 that year.

The employee said the business made several attempts to make phone contact with Tummings but she never returned the calls and Tummings never contacted the rental place, the warrant said.

Police made contact in September with a sister of Tummings, who said “Oh you are talking about that red Durango, aren’t you,” when police asked her if she was aware of any vehicle Tummings may be driving, the warrant continued.

The sister said Tummings had been going through some financial problems and didn’t know where Tummings had parked the car, the warrant said. The sister said she would have Tummings call police when she got home but after a week had gone by, police had not heard from Tummings and issued the warrant for her. The car remained stolen by the issuing of the warrant.

Tummings was arrested without incident on Tuesday around 6 a.m. when she was in the lobby of police headquarters. It wasn’t immediately clear if she turned herself in or was brought in by police.

Tummings was arraigned in New Britain Superior Court on Tuesday and ordered released on a promise to appear. She is due back in court on Aug. 19.
