NEW BRITAIN - Gallery 66 is now welcoming the work of “outsider artists” for an exhibition that will be displayed from July 29 to Sept. 6.

Outsider artists are self taught or new to art.

The “outsider artists” exhibition at Gallery 66 will welcome photography, paintings, prints and drawings. No three dimensional art or sculptures will be allowed in the exhibition.

This is the second year such exhibit is displayed at Gallery 66.

“It’s extremely different, which is why I’m interested in bringing it,” said Adrian Elliott, curator at Gallery 66. “It has been encouraged with people just coming up to me and I get it all the time. ‘Hey I want to show you something I’m working on but I’ll tell you it’s ripped out of a notebook.’”

Elliott said the work that will be accepted in this exhibit may be “not too kept, but is good work.”

The exhibit will not have an age criteria.

“Anyone can submit work,” Elliott said. “The gallery staff will select from those pieces. More than likely, we won’t refuse anybody.”

Artists must submit up to five pieces of work through e-mail with a short biography and a photo. The work to be displayed must be sent digitally in JPEG format. No vulgar images or language will be allowed.

Submissions must be e-mailed before July 19. A selection notification will be sent to artists on July 19.

“Chosen artists will have to reproduce their work,” Elliott said. “Right now everything is submitted through e-mail with a description of what it is, the materials used and then if it’s chosen we’ll go further.”

Selected art pieces may be dropped off at Gallery 66 on July 26 between 12 and 4 p.m. The opening reception of the exhibit will take place on Aug. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.
