NEW BRITAIN - A backpack filled with notebooks, pens, pencils and other supplies can go a long way toward helping a child feel motivated in school, said Tim Conaway at the back-to-school supply drive Saturday.

This was the Training and Motivation Center’s sixth year collecting supplies. Tim Conaway and his cousin, Torrence, run TMC.

“When you start off the year with everything, you’re happy and you’re ready,” said Tim Conaway.

Two police cruisers sat outside the New Britain Target store. Shoppers dropped off supplies as they walked past.

Tim Conaway said he decided to give back to the community in this way because it helps families cut costs and brings a smile to the kids’ faces.

“I love making kids happy,” he said.

He wants to collect as much as possible so no child will miss out.

Last year, TMC collected over $2,000 worth of school supplies. It’s aiming for even more this year.

Tim Conaway credits the community for the drive’s success. He especially wanted to thank Mayor Erin Stewart for her help.

Any little bit of help, even a pencil, helps a lot, he added.

“Hopefully, people see that and start giving,” Tim Conaway said.

Two New Britain officers helped pack the cruisers Saturday.

“I’ve always loved helping people,” said Officer Darius Conaway. He said his uncle, Tim Conaway, and his cousin, Torrence Conaway, inspired him to give back.

“I grew up in the city of New Britain - born and raised - and things like this helped me,” said Officer Corey Thomas. “It feels good to help people who grew up in the same place as me.”

TMC’s next event, on Aug. 18, will be a party at Criollisimo Restaurant, 340 Arch St., from 2 to 6 p.m. Participants can donate school supplies while eating free Puerto Rican food and entering in raffles. There will also be a DJ.

The sponsors of the back-to-school backpack giveaway are: Blaze Barbershop, Power House, Malibu Fitness, Stizer Family, Mayor Erin Stewart, Jack Banks, Torraway Solutions, Klingberg, Dungarvin, New Britain Target, Walgreens, Hancock Pharmacy and Attorney Lynn Ustack.
