CROMWELL - A New Britain man was flown to a hospital via LifeStar helicopter Tuesday after the tractor-trailer he was driving was hit by a pickup truck and rolled down an embankment on Interstate 91 in Cromwell, according to state police.
Diego Rivera, 36, of Greenwood Street, was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford with serious injuries, state police said. He was wearing a seat belt and the vehicle’s front airbags deployed in the crash.
No update on his condition was immediately available.
Rivera was traveling south on I-91 to the Exit 21 onramp, state police said. A Chevrolet Silverado traveling on the onramp crossed onto the travel portion of the road from the ramp and hit the passenger side of Rivera’s rig.
The pickup was driven by Assunto Cecere-Palazzo, 62, of Hemlock Drive, Southington, state police said.
Cecere-Palazzo’s pickup then spun and hit a guardrail on the right shoulder of the ramp, state police said. Rivera’s truck then went into the guard rail on the left shoulder, which it hit before rolling down the embankment and overturning onto its driver side.
Cecere-Palazzo sustained minor injuries and was take to Hartford Hospital by Hunter’s Ambulance, state police said. He also was wearing a seat belt.
The crash is under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to contact State Police Troop H at 860-534-1000.
