NEW BRITAIN - A group of local youngsters employed by the Human Resources Agency, Opportunities Industrialization Center and the YWCA will be throwing a school supply donation Glow Party for city residents 14 to 18 years old Saturday night.
The party is an effort to collect supplies to fill 25 backpacks to be donated to students at Northend Elementary School. It will run from 7 to 11 p.m. at 456 East St.
“This party is a great way to involve young adults in their community to give back while also having fun,” said Michal Urban, youth party co-coordinator at Neighborhood Housing Services of New Britain.
To get into the Glow Party, teens will have to donate a pack of pencils or a composition notebook and pay a $5 entry fee.
“We have worked hard and we hope that the youth will enjoy this party, while also, learning about the positive efforts to enrich their community,” added Urban.
Pizza and bottled water will be provided to the teens and additional snacks will be sold while they enjoy music provided by DJ DonQ, a performance by Jay Rock, raffles and more.
This is the first party of its kind, planned by local teens for local teens and is sponsored by NHSNB.
The community leaders of the North-Oak, Arch Area and East Side neighborhoods came up with this idea as a way to introduce youngters to community building, have them work alongside adult community leaders and create more community involvement. This effort is partially funded by a NeighborWorks America mini-grant.
“I am excited about giving kids the tools they need to succeed in school and also, looking forward to this donation party and many more,” said Maritza Villa, youth party co-coordinator.
Sponsors include Eblens Clothing & Footwear, Mofongo, Flight Fit N Fun and Sweetwater Juice Bar & Deli. Pizza is being donated by EastSide Pizza, Paradise, Tony’s Central and Pizza Pesto.
