NEW BRITAIN - Residents will have an opportunity to learn more about their mayoral and Common Council candidates in an upcoming public forum.

The New Britain Area League of Women Voters will be hosting a candidate forum from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Trinity-On-Main, 69 Main St. It is open to the public and the community is encouraged to come and get to know the candidates who hope to lead the city.

Thirty three candidates, including three mayoral candidates, will participate in a question and answer session. Members of the public will have opportunities to pose questions during the event. The mayoral candidates, Mayor Erin Stewart, Christopher Porcher and Deivone Tanksley will each give a short opening statement to kick off the forum. The question and answer session will be presented in three separate sections, including alderman, ward alderman, and mayor.

Basia Maselek, voter services chair for the New Britain Area League of Women Voters, said this is a great opportunity for voters to come out and meet their current and future leaders.

“It’s always good to hear what ideas people have and what concerns they have,” she said. “It’s also interesting to hear what people think about the future of New Britain.”

The League of Women Voters has been organizing forums like this for a long time, said Maselek. The main reason was to give the people an opportunity to learn about their candidates and become an informed voter.

“It’s so important to be informed,” she said. “So that’s our mission, to give that opportunity to the city and to the residents.”

The event is free and all are welcome.
