NEW BRITAIN – The Diaspora Multicultural Society is hosting “Late Night for Puerto Rico” to raise funds for Puerto Rico after the recent earthquakes.

Due to the threat of inclement weather this weekend, the benefit has been rescheduled from Saturday, Jan. 18 to Friday, Jan. 24 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Diaspora Multicultural Society at 90 John St.

Admission to the event is a $10 minimum donation and music will be provided by DJ Bryant.

Club Diaspora is a diverse social club that’s laid back during business hours and hosts events that appeal to many interests. The mission of the club is to bring together a diverse crowd to co-mingle, build community, and to have fun through quality and socially conscious programming and entertainment.

“It’s important to the club that we build community together and believe that the world is our neighbor,” said Violet Sims, club president. “Puerto Rico is a part of the U.S. and we have many members who are either from Puerto Rico or who have family living there. It’s important to us to help out during these times.”

The club has hosted other similar events to benefit past disasters, including Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the Guatemala earthquake in 2018.

State Rep. Robert Sanchez is also involved with the event, working in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain. The foundation is accepting monetary donations through its Greater New Britain Disaster Response Fund, in which all donations will go directly towards Puerto Rico in the form of grants to agencies on the island.

All proceeds from Friday’s event will go into the disaster response fund.
