NEW BRITAIN – State Rep. Rick Lopes, who represents New Britain and Newington, has been named House Chairman of the legislature’s Banking Committee.
The Banking Committee has cognizance of matters relating to banks and trust companies, savings and loan associations, credit unions, the sale of securities, and lending.
Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz, representing Berlin and Southington, emphasized the importance of the committee in building confidence in the economy. “The Banking Committee plays a critical role in our overall economic picture going forward and can help drive future growth,” said Aresimowicz. “I asked Rep. Lopes to lead the Banking Committee because he has a good feel for business and understands many of the issues relating to our financial institutions.”
Lopes currently serves on the legislatures’ Finance, Transportation and Energy Committees. He was first elected to the General Assembly in 2012. He said banking and the financial sector have a strong history in Connecticut and Hartford still has a large platform in the financial sector. “Keeping them strong and vibrant is essential to our state’s future economic growth,” said Lopes.
As an owner of a few small businesses, Lopes said he understands the importance of business and economic development in the state.
“I always envision myself as a practical and fair minded legislator,” he said. “We have a lot of potential for more growth here. I want to work with the banking and financial committee to make sure that we can harness all the resources of the state and keep our engines running.”
