NEWINGTON – A local sandwich shop is feeding hungry health professionals, emergency responders and other essential workers as they serve on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic.

DiBella’s Subs, a national sandwich chain founded in Rochester, NY, is still operating at full staff at its Newington franchise, located at 3583 Berlin Tpke.

DiBella’s began offering subs at 50% off to all essential workers mid-March.

“It’s a way we can make it easier for people on the front lines who are so important right now,” regional catering sales manager Danielle Cadden said Thursday. “The work they’re doing is amazing and this is just one less thing for them to worry about.”

Additionally, customers who want to donate a tray of subs to first responders, military, healthcare or otherwise essential workers will get 50% off that order through the Pay it Forward campaign. DiBella’s will match half the cost and deliver it for free.

Well over 80 trays of subs have been donated to locations in and around the Hartford area since this began.

The Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain Police, Bristol Hospital and St. Francis Hospital have all received donations of DiBella’s from community members.

“We’ve had a lot of people reach out through our Pay it Forward campaign,” Cadden pointed out, adding that another busy workplace staff in Newington have delivered to is Amazon in Bristol.

“We’ve actually done quite a bit with Amazon,” she said. “In the mornings we’re there with fresh sandwiches, chips and cookies to make sure the drivers have lunch for the day.”

The company just began another new initiative Wednesday, offering boxed lunches to local nurses in honor of National Nurses Week.

Here’s how it works: when a customer purchases one or more boxed lunches at full price, DiBella’s will match the donation and send boxed lunches to nurses in the hospitals it has been serving throughout the region. This offer runs through May 16.

Since the beginning of this pandemic, DiBella’s has donated close to $30,000 from sales to the Connecticut Food Bank. This will provide over 60,000 meals to families struggling financially across the state.
