NEW BRITAIN – This weekend cousins Timothy and Torrence Conaway of the Training and Motivation Center will be partnering with the New Britain Police Department outside Target in New Britain for their 7th annual “stuff the cruiser” fundraiser.

“I believe this is the only one that has been consistent in the city of New Britain,” Torrence said. “It’s a way to try to give New Britain residents the opportunity to get a jumpstart on the school year and take away that extra burden of buying supplies and focus on uniforms or whatever else they have to do for their child that year.”

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

“This year we’re really trying to promote this and get the most we can get because it’s been a tough year for a lot of people,” Tim added. “With the covid and people not working we’re trying this year to really make it big.”

They are looking for people to donate pencils, pens, paper, highlighters, folders, binders, backpacks, calculators, crayons, colored pencils, markers, staplers, notebooks, glue, scissors, rulers and youth PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), like sanitizers and kid’s hand soap.

“We want to encourage everyone to come out and give what you can; any little thing counts,” Tim said. “I’ve had a lot of phone calls already because people are looking forward to this.”

Tim expressed they didn’t run into any challenges putting things together for this year’s event despite the pandemic.

“Lt. Julia Gallup of the NBPD was very helpful with putting this event together,” he said. “And we were still able to get sponsors.”

The sponsors include Blaze Barber Shop, New Britain Police Department, New Britain Target, Mayor Erin Stewart, Criollisimo Restaurant and Todd Stitzer.

“We’re just looking for people to come out even if it is just to say hi. It’s been a crazy year and we want to bring everyone together and put some smiles on some faces,” Tim said.

The school supplies collected will be given out to the kids in need in the community at TMC’s Back 2 School Giveaway on Saturday, August 22 at Blaze Barbershop from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
