NEW BRITAIN – The Boys & Girls Club of New Britain received a $5,000 donation Thursday afternoon from Aaron’s to continue its efforts in supporting the community’s youth.

“I love children. I have children and that’s who we live for,” said Andres Davila, general manager at Aaron’s in New Britain. “I will always help in the community, especially to keep kids off the streets, especially in the climate we’re in right now.”

Davila has been supportive of the club asking what they need and what can be done to make the community better for the children in the city.

“It’s important to the kids in our community that we have our corporate sponsors and the community helps support our kids,” said James Jones, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of New Britain. “Andres has reached out three times in my six months in tenure here to see what he can do. He continues to have that partnership with us and he’s also trying to let other businesses know this is the best organization in town and everyone should help out.”

The club has been utilizing the contributions from Aaron’s and others to renovate and make the space more inviting.

“We’ve been doing things that they asked for like a refurbished game room, teen center and learning center,” Jones said. “We got the pool open for the winter; it hasn’t been open for the winter in seven years because it was too expensive to operate. We got a grant from NBT Bank to cover that cost, so kids have been swimming and having fun; we made it like a little Coco Key’s (a water park) for them.”

“I think this is amazing; it starts here in the community and we all have to help,” Davila added. “It takes a village and I’m going to continue to help.”

Jones said with all the updates and great things they’re doing they’re looking forward to getting kids back for the spring.

“As members of the board, we appreciate the engagement of the business community and the positive contributions they are making to the next generation of leadership in our community. They are making a difference and it’s not about the amount, it’s about the contribution that people make to helping improve the life and environment of the young people in our city,” said Rick Mullins, Boys & Girls Club of New Britain board president. “We greatly appreciate Aaron’s; they’ve made multiple donations to us and it’s so nice they keep on giving and I think that’s a reflection of the leadership here at the Boys & Girls Club, the programs that are run here and the lifelong impact it has on people who have been engaged in that.”

New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart is proud of the business community for supporting these efforts.

“We have a great business community here in New Britain and I think it’s really awesome to see that Aaron’s and other local businesses are investing in the kids in our community,” Stewart said. “I think that the important piece here is we have a lot of organizations like the Boys & Girls Club that can always use the added help whether the money goes for new furniture or X-Boxes or whatever I think there’s always a need.”
