NEW BRITAIN – The Outsider Artists Exhibit is returning to Gallery 66 this year and the deadline for submissions has been extended an extra week.

“It’s an exhibit geared toward self-taught artists and/or hobbyists, people who haven’t been formally taught through any art education or instruction,” said Adrian Elliott, curator of Gallery 66. “It’s open to all visual artists not excluding photographers.”

Typically, those labeled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. In many cases, their work is previously undiscovered.

“There is no age limit or limitations outside of if you went to school for this you can’t participate,” Elliott said.

The submitted media can range from paintings, prints, drawings (no 3D) and photography. Artists must submit through e-mail three to five pieces of work including the size of the artwork and media with a short biography and a self-photo. The artwork must be 11x11 to 20x30. The work to be displayed must be sent digitally in JPEG format and no vulgar images or offensive language is allowed.

The exhibition will be displayed from Oct. 25 to Dec. 17. The reception will be on Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m.

“This is the return of the Outsider Artists exhibit,” Elliott said. “Covid, we got away from it, but we decided to bring it back out of people asking. Having the gallery back open we have more interest in this particular exhibit; people that know people that remembered the last time we exhibited this particular show have been calling asking and wondering when we were going to get it back.”

Gallery 66 opened its first Outsider Artists exhibit in 2018.

“We are excited about its return,” Elliott said. “Artists have continued to create through the pandemic and we are delighted to provide a platform to display these works of art.”

The submissions must be e-mailed on or before the extended date of Thursday, Oct. 21 by 4 p.m. and a selection notification will be sent to artists on Monday, Oct. 25. The chosen artists will have artwork presentation ready and the selected art pieces may be dropped off at Gallery 66 on or before Friday, Oct. 22 between 12 and 4 p.m.
