NEWINGTON - The Newington boys volleyball team bounced back in a big way Thursday night.

After getting swept the night before, the Indians battled their way to a five-set, 3-2 win over Masuk.

“I’m glad with the way we responded after a tough outing Wednesday against South Windsor and came out against a good team today,” Newington head coach Curt Burns said. “They’re a good team that has just played three tough opponents so far.”

Evan Metzger recorded 56 assists for the Indians, while teammate Andres Ithier-Vicenty had 24 kills. Zach Harmon and Kevin Bilbraut rounded out the highlights for Newington. Harmon had 15 kills and 11 assists and Bilbraut had 34 digs.

New Britain 18, Platt 0: It took five innings for the Hurricanes’ game against the Panthers to be called on Wednesday afternoon. Platt probably hoped it would have been over much sooner than that. New Britain’s bats worked from the get-go.

Paola Bronner hit a home run for her third of the season and stole three bases. Jamyra Irizarry hit two triples, a single and home run herself. She finished the afternoon with six RBI. Cristina Velazquez was the third Hurricanes player to homer. Gianna Gonzalez earned the win for New Britain and struck out six batters. She also added a couple of hits on offense.
