Sports Roundup: Michalek throws complete-game shutout, Plainville baseball tops Middletown

MIDDLETOWN - Nate Michalek was in complete control on Thursday afternoon as he allowed just one hit to Middletown in his complete-game effort to lead the Plainville baseball team to an 8-0 victory, its sixth of the season.

Michalek struck out nine Blue Dragons in the game and allowed just three base runners.

The Blue Devils didn’t get the offense going until the fifth inning but they scored two in the fifth and six in the sixth to put the game away. Brady Callahan, Jon Olson and Dylan Morrell each had two hits in the winning effort, while Grant Sarra had a team-high two RBI.

Southington 6, Conard 4: The Blue Knights punched their ticket to the Class LL tournament with a win over Conard on Thursday despite committing five errors. Connor McDonough picked up the win while Jon Gray went 3-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Matt Sciota went 2-4 with a double and run scored.

Wilcox Tech 7, Goodwin Tech 6: The Gladiators had their 12-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday at the hands of Wilcox Tech. Dave Plourde picked up the loss for Goodwin Tech, who had 10 hits and two errors. Josh Masterson was a standout in the loss as he went 3-4 with a triple and two RBI. This was the Gladiators’ first loss since the season opener against New Britain.

SOFTBALL

Wilcox Tech 12, Goodwin Tech 0: The Gladiators couldn’t get much going against Wilcox Tech starter Alexandra Nissle and dropped their ninth game of the season. Ashley Rivera took the loss for Goodwin Tech but still pitched a good game according to head coach Paul Soucy. Rivera also had the Gladiators’ only two hits in the game.

Newington 15, Bristol Central 0 (5 innings): The Indians picked up their 11th win of the season in dominating fashion on Thursday. Kat Lagace only went three innings because of the blowout nature of the game and she allowed just one hit. At the plate she went 2-3 with two triples and two runs. Cyan Gonzalez went 3-5 with a home run and three RBI, while Rache Thureson went 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

BOYS GOLF

Kaynor Tech 219, Goodwin Tech 254: The Gladiators were taken down by Kaynor Tech at East Mountain Golf Course on Thursday afternoon. Hunter Holley put up the best score for Goodwin Tech with a 58, while Farrell Leardi (60) and Josh Domaghy (65) followed. Kaynor Tech’s George Pastorek was the medalist after shooting a 44.

New Britain 210, Bristol Eastern 212: The Hurricanes squeaked past winless Bristol Eastern on Thursday to earn their third win of the season. Kevin Merkle was the co-medalist with Eastern’s Jake Rodjenski, as both shot a 47, while Tim Carrier was also notable with his 48, just one shot off the pace.

BOYS TENNIS

New Britain 4, Plainville 3: The Hurricanes picked up their fourth win of the season as all four singles players won their matches on Thursday at Plainville high school. Travis Brown, Branden Khongdy, Ali Saleh and Pablo Castellanos were the individual winners for New Britain, while all three Plainville doubles pairs won their matches.

Bristol Eastern 5, Newington 2: The Indians dropped to .500 with a loss to Bristol Eastern on Thursday afternoon. Sean Davis was the only singles player to pick up a win for Newington, while the doubles pairing of Sam Johnson and David Magsayo also picked up a tight win.

Berlin 5, Bristol Central 2: The Redcoats were without top player Jon Trevethan on Thursday afternoon but they were still able to pull out their fifth win of the season. Berlin swept the doubles matches while Nick Halkias and Kevin Stafstrom both put together dominant performances in singles.

Glastonbury 6, Southington 1: The Blue Knights were dominated by Glastonbury on Thursday afternoon. It wasn’t until the final doubles match that Southington got on the scoreboard. The tandem of Sam Johnson and Mike Loose picked up Southington’s lone win in three sets.

GIRLS GOLF

New Britain 207, Plainville 232: The Hurricanes extended the Blue Devils’ winless streak to six to start the season on Thursday. New Britain’s Ava Morelle was the medalist as she shot a 47, while Monika Mocarska had the second best score of the day with a 49. Plainville’s top scorer was Alexa Sirois and she shot a 54.

Newington 164, Middletown 181: The Indians picked up their sixth win of the season and Jessica Pierzchalski earned co-medalist with her 35. This was the sixth straight match Pierzchalski has either been medalist or co-medalist. Chloe Bilodeau was also notable as she shot a 37 and head coach Rich Condon pointed out that she has been consistent lately.

BOYS LACROSSE

Berlin 16, Bristol Central 3: The Redcoats picked up their seventh win of the season in a team effort on Thursday. Five different Berlin players scored multiple goals with Tyler Ralph leading the way with four. Will Salwocki followed closely with three goals and T.J. Hebert had two along with winning 18 of 19 faceoffs.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Newington 3, Lewis Mills 2: The Indians pulled out a tight match against Lewis Mills on Thursday night, winning in five sets. Zach Harmon and Andres Ithier-Vicenty had 15 kills apiece, while Dan Cloutier had 18 assists and Vinh Dau added seven kills and eight digs.
