BERLIN - After trailing by eight points at halftime, the Berlin girls basketball team made a strong comeback in the third quarter, but visiting Newington held on to win the season opener for both teams at Berlin High on Monday night.
Berlin’s Lyzi Litwinko had a triple double on the night, with 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 points. Also for the Redcoats, Ashley Wenzel scored 14 points, Angela Perrelli had 11, Carly Grega netted seven and Zenae Lewis added four.
The Indians were led by Ashanti Frazier (23 points), Aby Flores (15), Gio Rivera (7) and Olivia St. Remy (4).
New Britain 63, Plainville 52: The Hurricanes overcame a slow start to get their first victory under new head coach Marc Wesoly, winning at Plainville.
The Blue Devils led 27-19 at halftime, but the Hurricanes had taken the lead by the end of the third quarter.
New Britain was led by Gabriella Roy (16 points), Emani James (13 points, 13 rebounds), Tianna Sweeney (10 points, 20 rebounds), Inanna Wright (8 points), Maya Slisz (6 points) and Brianna Clarke (6 points).
For Plainville, Caitlin Barker had a game-high 27 points, Isabel Lozefski scored eight, Jaida Vasquez had seven and Samantha Lozefski netted six.
East Granby 47, Innovation 15: The Ravens struggled in their season opener at East Granby. Bailee Nardee led Innovation with seven points, while Christinia Nizario-Fernadez had four points and eight blocks.
