NEW BRITAIN - Berlin wrestling had a state champion as Dan Veleas placed first in the Class M state tournament at 132 pounds.
As a team the Redcoats finished in 13th place with 86 points and also had two other place finishers in Moses Marino and Josh Veleas.
Marino placed 4th at 152 pounds while Veleas was 4th at 160.
Plainville had two wrestlers place in the Class S tournament and finished in 17th place as a team with 50 points. Dominic Pedrolini (113 pounds) and Sebby Soli (126) each placed 6th.
Goodwin Tech had a place finisher as Eduardo Morales finished in 6th place at 195 pounds. As a team the Gladiators placed 26th with 15 points.
Newington wrestling didn’t have any place finishers and finished in 20th place with 30 points as a team. The Indians had four wrestlers post wins on the day with Aidan Corriveau (106 pounds), Jacob Zotti (120), Matthew Buslewicz (152) and Aidan Lozada (170) all registering one win on the day.
Southington led the area with eight place finishers, including a second place finish with Paul Calo coming in second at 170 pounds.
The Blue Knights finished tied in third place with Trumbull with 175 points.
Tagan Welch (152 pounds) and Jacob Vecchio (220) each placed third.
Jacob Cardozo (126) and William Carr (160) placed fourth.
Caleb Brick (106), Jason Brault (132) and Shaun Wagner (138) all placed fifth.
New Britain had a pair of place finishers. Isaiah Medina placed fourth at 195 pounds and Elijah Watson finished in sixth place at 132 pounds.
The Hurricanes were 16th place as a team with 59 points.
Cheshire 98, Southington 88: The Blue Knights fell to 5-4 with the loss to the Rams.
The meet was tied three different times but Southington couldn’t pull it out at the end.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Brendon Egan, Tyler Heidgard, Alex Kuhr and Quint Kimmel took first place with a time of 1:36.26.
Heidgard also won the 200 freestyle (1:51.33) and the 100 freestyle (51.06).
Brian Egan took first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.52.
EJ Suski was first in diving. He finished with a score of 241.80.
