MERIDEN - The New Britain boys golf team left Hunter Golf Course soaking wet as the April weather poured down rain, but they also walked off with its first win of the season.
Arthur Bell’s score of 54 earned him the medalist of the match as the Hurricanes downed Platt 233-265, improving New Britain’s record to 1-2-1.
“It wasn't pretty,” head coach Robert Zadrozny said. “Conditions were monsoon-like at times and I have to give my guys credit for gutting it out under very tough weather conditions”
The Hurricanes boasted the top-4 finishes of the day, including Bell’s top score. Brandon Carlina, Manny Benitez and Dylan Washington finished with scores of 57, 59 and 63, respectively. Platt’s top finisher, Refat Hossain, matched Washington’s 63 to finish atop the Panthers’ golfers.
Newington 3, Farmington 0: Another day, another win for Newington, which moved to a perfect 10-0 thanks to a 3-0 sweep of Farmington on Monday. Of Newington’s 10 wins, seven have come by 3-0 scores.
“Any time you play a CCC-West opponent it’s a tough battle,” Newington head coach Curt Burns said. “But we were able to get better as the match went.”
Newington gutted out a close 25-23 win in the first set before cruising in the next two, including a 25-9 win in the third. Leonel Caceres had a balanced day with 28 assists, four service aces and five digs, while Louis Egbuna led the team in kills with 12.
