NEW BRITAIN - The New Britain girls basketball team is still working on trying to play a full four quarters.

The Hurricanes haven’t gotten quite there yet.

Hampered by another slow start that saw the team score just two points in the opening period, New Britain fell to Farmington 57-45 on Friday. The Hurricanes are now 1-3 in Beryl Piper’s first season on the bench after a 13-year stint as the CCSU women’s basketball team’s head coach.

Layla Mejia led New Britain with a team-high 16 points, while Maya Slisz added 14. They were the only two Hurricanes players to reach double-figures. Emma Novajasky led Farmington with a game-high 25 points.

After a rough first quarter and first half overall that saw New Britain down 28-12 at the break, the Hurricanes responded with a much stronger second half. The Hurricanes outscored Farmington 16-15 in the third quarter and 17-14 over the final eight minutes, with nine points coming from Slisz.
