NEW BRITAIN – A sloppy second quarter sunk New Britain football in its 25-6 loss to Middletown on Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Blue Dragons scored 17 points in the frame, with the Hurricanes committing two fumbles and a handful of penalties, as the visitors rolled past New Britain for its first win of the season.

“Obviously the turnovers were huge,” New Britain coach Isaiah Boddie said. “In the game of football you can’t turn over the ball. I think we had way too many penalties moving forward. A lot of things we have to continue to fix and continue to work on.”

Middletown quarterback Colin Skene and receiver Chace Petgrave accounted for three of its four scores on a trio of touchdown receptions. The Blue Dragons also kicked a 22-yard field goal in the second. Skene finished 15-24 for 236 yards while Petgrave hauled in seven catches for 132 yards.

“They did a good job, had a good game plan,” Boddie said of Middletown’s dangerous duo. “[Petgrave] did a great job catching the ball, breaking a couple of tackles and getting in the endzone. [Skene] put it right where it needed to be and they’ve been doing a pretty good job with those two all year.”

The Hurricanes lone touchdown occurred in the fourth on a nine-yard reception from Anthony Calvelli. Calvelli led New Britain receivers with 42 yards earned on four catches.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Blue Dragons went up 3-0, then quickly tacked on 14 more points on two pass-catch combos from Skene and Petgrave.

Ahead 17-0 at halftime, the Blue Dragons went to work again in the third with a lengthy drive that resulted in a 3-yard touchdown catch from Petgrave. Middletown pulled off the 2-point conversion to lead 25-0 with about 17 minutes of regulation to play to all but seal the victory.

Campbell found Calvelli at the start of the fourth quarter for a score, but that’s all the hosts could put on the board for its fifth loss of the season.

Campbell concluded 8-15 for 86 yards and a touchdown while running backs Cameron Bond and Diego Ortiz combined for 68 yards rushing.
