MANCHESTER – Goodwin Tech girls basketball won Tuesday night, winning over Cheney Tech 33-13 in a good defensive effort.
Goodwin trailed by one at 7-6 through the first quarter but was able to find its scoring touch in the second quarter, outscoring Cheney 13-4 to enter halftime leading 19-11. A shutout in the fourth quarter saw Goodwin extend its lead even further en route to the win.
Leading in scoring for Goodwin was Megan Lukeszewski with 10 points. She was the only player in the game with double-digit points.
Ericka Aponte had nine points for Goodwin.
Terryville 45, Wamogo 33: Terrville girls basketball won Tuesday night, defeating Wamogo 45-33.
The win for Terryville is its first of the season to snap a five-game losing stral, with Grace Daly scoring a career-high 19 points to lead the team. Zoe Zappone had six points and six steals in the win while Allison Drake added eight poins.
Newington 61, Berlin 32: Newington girls basketball reained perfect Tuesday night, winning over Berlin 61-32 for its ninth in a row.
The Nor’easters led 17-10 through the first quarter and entered haftime up 30-20. A two-point third quarter from the Redcoats allowed Newington to pull away as they didn’t let up into the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Lilly Ferguson scored her 1,000th career point in the win. She scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and had three assists.
Adirana Romano had 13 points and Bela Cucuta had 11 points as complementary pieces for Newington on the floor.
Leading in scoring for Berlin was Kailee DeMaio with eight points. Emma Ellison and Rylee Cop each had six points.
Bristol Eastern 59, East Catholic 47: Bristol Eastern girls basketball defeated East Catholic Tuesday night, winning 59-47.
The Lancers led 28-18 at halftime, doubling their lead to 20 at the end of the third quarter before East Catholic surged late – but Eastern was able to hold on for its second win of the season.
Ciara Collins scored 24 points, with 14 points coming in the third quarter. Janessa Gonzalez had 16 points as well for Bristol Eastern.
Farmington 46, New Britain 37: New Britain girls basketball, playing in its first game since Dec. 23, lost to Farmington 46-37 on Tuesday.
The Hurricanes led by two at 16-14 in the first quarter, but were outscored by nine in the second qurter to enter intermission down 28-21. New Britain struggled to regain its lead as Farmington outscored it in the remaining two quarters.
Leading in scoring for New Britain was Layla Mejia with nine points. Xandra Silva and Kaylee Cahill had eight points each
Kiatyanna Denmark had eight rebounds, five points and three steals.
