The Baltimore Orioles organization announced its minor league baseball hires for the upcoming 2022 season, with a New Britain native cracking the list of new faces joining to Orioles organization.

Roberto Mercado was hired to replace Dave Anderson as the had coach of the Single-A Aberdeen Ironbirds on Wednesday morning. Mercado was the head baseball coach at New Britain from 2011 to 2021, and was the acting dean of students since 2004.

Mercado’s coaching history includes a stop in the Cape Cod Baseball league, acting as an assistant coach with the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox from 2014-21. Notable alumni to come through Yarmouth while Mercado was there includes Patrick Bailey (2018), Shane Bieber (2015), Tommy Edman (2015), Nico Hoerner (2017) and Austin Wells (2019). All are on the 40-man roster of professional ballclubs in MLB, with the exception of Bailey and Wells – who are top prospects for the Giants and Yankees, respectively.

He was also the head coach of the Goodwill Series American team in New Zealand and Australia from 2017 to 2021.

The Ironbirds play out of Aberdeen, Maryland, and are currently owned by former Orioles great and Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. They play in the High-A East League and have won one league title (1983).

A follow up story with comments from Mercado will be featured in the New Britain and Bristol Press later on in the week.
