NEW BRITAIN ― The New Britain boys basketball team finished its regular season on a high note, winning its senior-day matchup against Rocky Hill 59-28 on Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes will enter the Division I state tournament with a 9-11 record after holding the Terriers to their third-lowest point total of the season. Rocky Hill never scored more than nine points in a quarter as New Britain picked up one of its biggest wins of the season.

Senior Xavier Goode was the Hurricanes’ leading scorer in his final game in the New Britain gym, notching 19 points on five threes to give his team an early lead and protect it.

Goode opened his senior day by drilling three three-pointers in the first quarter and posting 11 points in the first eight minutes. The Hurricanes led by seven after the first period and never looked back as their lead only grew against the struggling Terriers.

“He’s our best shooter,” New Britain coach Kurt Reis said. “Sometimes we have to remind him [he is] passing up shots that he should be taking. I think we’re a dangerous team when he’s hitting shots.”

Goode was the game’s leading scorer at half despite not adding any points in the second quarter. Jackson Forte took on the offensive lead and scored six points in the period as New Britain continued to outperform Rocky Hill.

The Hurricanes continued to pull away after halftime as Goode hit two more threes and they continued to spread the ball around to attack the Terriers’ defense. Junior Dontay Bishop posted four of his nine points in the third quarter and finished the game making five of his six free-throw attempts.

Senior Dennis Forbes tied Bishop for their teams’ second-leading scorer, making the most of his time in the fourth quarter to post seven late points.

With their regular season in the books, the Hurricanes are off until their opening game of the Division I State Tournament at the beginning of March.

“It always feels good to get a win,” Reis said. “Should we be 9-11? Probably not. But it’s a 20 game season and things happen. Hopefully learn from it, have a good week and a half of practice, try to get some scrimmages in and see what happens.”
