After just three seasons as a program, the New Britain boys volleyball team has improved their skill level and mindset, being able to now compete at the highest level. And the early results of the spring season have proven that to be true.
The Golden Hurricanes are 4-1 this season. They opened with a road win over Wethersfield (25-23, 25-19, 25-19), followed that with a sweep of SMSA/Bulkeley (25-15, 25-10, 25-8), beat Wolcott Tech in their home opener (25-13, 25-16, 25-16) and defeated Lewis Mills as well (25-20, 26-24, 25-18). The lone loss came against an established Enfield squad (25-22, 25-19, 25-18).
In all five matches, New Britain received strong performances from a number of players. Senior captain Anthony Olmeda has 52 kills, 57 assists and leads the team with 51 service points. Junior captain Davin Siharath has collected 21 kills, 60 assists and 30 service points. Middle hitter Lexus Sanchez has been a key factor with 35 kills, 25 blocks and 29 service points.
New Britain has received strong defensive performances from Ryam Castillo and Jose Pagan. In the front row sophomores Daniel Senior and Lee Chambers have played well on several occasions. New Britain also calls upon Juan Desiderio and Eddy Sandoval in the front row as blockers and middle hitters.
