NEWINGTON – The Newington Parks and Recreation Department is looking for creative residents, businesses and civic organizations that are willing to showcase the fall season with the town’s first ever Scarecrow Contest.
The entries for the contest will be displayed outside the Mortensen Community Center on Garfield Street. Organizers are looking for funny, creative and original scarecrows built and entered by individuals, families, businesses or civic organizations.
There will be two categories – one for businesses and non-profits and the other for families and friends. The scarecrows must be registered with the Parks and Recreation Department by Oct. 6 and must be installed at their designated location from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 14. Coffee and donuts will be provided as the scarecrows are being installed. Everyone who enters must make a $5 donation which will go toward the 2018 Life. Be in it. Extravaganza Firework Show.
The contest is open to all ages with one entry per person, family or group. The winner of the business and non-profit contest will receive a free business card advertisement in the Parks and Recreation Winter Brochure which goes out to over 13,000 households. The winners of the family and friends category will receive a $100 gift certificate for first place and a $50 gift certificate for second place to any program that the Newington Parks and Recreation Department offers.
A Facebook poll will be set up so people can vote for their favorite scarecrow. The scarecrows will remain up until Nov. 1.
Each scarecrow will be given a number that corresponds with their location on Garfield Street during registration. The scarecrow and its surrounding display much be no more than six-feet by six-feet.
