NEWINGTON - Newington was the first town in the area to cancel school ahead of today’s snowstorm.

School district officials had made their decision by midday Wednesday as preparations begam for the first major winter storm of the season.

Parents and teachers normally receive telephone notification of a snow day by 6 a.m. on the day of the storm, but School Superintendent Bill Collins decided to make the calls early.

“A high confidence weather prediction for heavy snow during rush hour and through the day requires the cancellation of school and all activities for Thursday, January 4, 2018,” he posted on the schools’ website. “All school and district offices will be closed as well.”

On the school district’s Facebook page, a picture of polar bears rolling in the snow was posted, with the text, “Roll over and go back to sleep. It’s a snow day!”

Six to 10 inches of snow and high wind gusts are expected in Central Connecticut, with the heaviest snow falling this morning and early afternoon.
