NEWINGTON - The Lucy Robbins Welles Library will be the scene of a festive party on Friday, Jan. 19.

The Friends of the LRWL are looking forward to their eighth Annual Wine, Beer and Cheese Social, 6:30 to 9 p.m.

“It started off in 2011 as an event to celebrate our 50th anniversary,” Friends’ President Natalie Harbeson recalled. “Everyone enjoyed it so much we’ve been doing it ever since.”

Dozens of Newington businesses have stepped up to provide door prizes and items for silent and tea cup auctions taking place that evening.

“I have 50 donations from area businesses,” Head of Community Services Michelle Royer explained. “It’s going to be a blast.”

The library has 320 tickets available. They can be purchased for $15 at the door and $20 in advance.

In addition, guests can buy $10 raffle tickets for a “lottery tree” containing $150 in lottery tickets.

Tickets for the teacup auction are $5 for 20.

Pizza will be served by TJ’s on Cedar. Stew Leonard’s will provide the wine and cheese. New Britain’s Alvarium Brewery will have a beer tasting set up.

CT Beverage Mart will also be on hand, taking orders from guests for store pickup. Those who place orders will be entered into a drawing for a gift basket.

The moment they walk through the library entrance, people will be handed a “passport” with an event map on which to collect prize stamps upon visiting each area.

Jazz musician Dana Lauren is set to provide musical entertainment.

The event is one of the Friends’ principal fundraisers, second only to the annual book sale.

The volunteer foundation funds much of the library’s programming, including outdoor adventures for children and teens. It also sponsors the popular adult series Made in Connecticut, featuring handmade products and the people who create them.

Of the 600 Friends, about 150 are active in regular activities. Over the last few decades, they’ve provided seed money for technology initiatives, from the latest e-reading devices all the way back to the debut of VHS tapes.

One of the group’s newest ventures is an upcoming purchase of mobile shelving to open more space in the facility.

In other news, the library’s 2018 Winter Reading Program kicked off last week.

Adult participants are asked to log in their reading each day, either on the library’s webpage or in the facility itself. They will receive one prize ticket for each title read and be eligible for weekly prize drawings. “Swing into Reading” culminates Feb. 23 at 12 p.m. with a grand prize drawing. Children’s winter reading features rainforest-themed events and reading challenges. The kick-off is Saturday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m. Kids ages 4 to 12 are invited to enter the Animal Embassy and meet live creatures that roam the rainforest at night.

Children may collect their prizes from Feb. 20-28.

Winter Reading is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
